   CALL lesson 6

Tomorrow, June 20th, is our last CALL lesson this year. You can do exercises, as you suggested in class last Friday, or anything else you want.

Carla Arena, a friend and colleague in Brasilia, invited you to leave a message in her students' blog about the World Cup 2006, Brazil and Brazilians Connected. Here's what she wrote (18Jun):

Dear all,
Congrats for Portugal!!! I´ve heard that you don´t get to the eigth finals for 40 years! And you know, Teresa, Ramona, Cristina, I love Felipão, the Portuguese team coach. He is fantastic!
My students and I are hoping to get your students to interact with us at
http://brazilandbrazilians.blogspot.com
Carla

This what I replied/answered (18Jun):

Dear Carla,
True. It's our first eighth final in 40 years! There's a special taste to it!!! :-)
I also like Scolari, as he is called here.
I'll try to have my kids leave a message in the blog next Tuesday. It's their last lesson and I'll let them do what they want, so... no promises.
Hugs, Teresa

And still another comment from Carla:

Dear Tere,
That´s great! Your kids must be really excited about it and we would love to hear from them! Felipão, as he is known here, is extremely popular here in Brazil. I´m his fan!
Cheers for all of us!
Carla

Enjoy today's lesson! Next year there is more!!!

Your radical, crazy and funny teacher

5D chose (= escolheu) leaving a message in the Brazilian blog.

Good morning from Portugal!
How are you?
The colors of the pancakes are in!!!
Portugal will be champions!!! ;-)
We like Portugal and Brazil in the final!
[meaning 'in fashion'!]
We have two Brazilian students in our class: Thayná (Itaúna) and Higor (Bahia).
Bye, everyone! See you in the final!!!!!!
Hugs from 5D

Comments from parents / Comentários dos pais

As I promised in class this morning, here is the place where parents can leave a message about the work that their children are doing. I hope that all parents can take a close look and leave your comment in English or Portuguese. Thank you!

Obrigado!

Report on CALL lesson 5

Last week's lesson went more or less according to plan. This week wed no school, because it's a holiday in the greater Lisbon area. It's Saint Anthony's Day, the patron of Lisbon.

5D is a larger class with 28 students and also a little more agitated than the other two, so it isn't always possible to do everything in the plan. However, they did quite well in CALL lesson 5 and were able to visit and leave a message both in Holling's blog (May 21) and in the Brazilian students' blog (Carolina and Bianca's post, May 22), but there wasn't time for the recording. Tiago and Natanael took turns at the keyboard and Marta was at the board.

Then came 5C who was able to visit Sharon and Holling's blog, leave a comment for them and record it. Raquel was at the computer and Luis was at the board.

Sharon left this message for 5D and 5C in Holling's blog (May 21 post):

Hi 5C and 5D,
I hope that you have read my answers to your questions on your class blog.
You will be surprised to find out how early in the morning that I get out of bed.
When are you all coming for dinner? Your teacher is bringing her very special cod dish. I think that I'll make some brownies. Do you like brownies? Yum!
Ooops, it's getting late and I have to leave for school. Holling can't type so I will have to end this message.
See you soon ;-)
Sharon and Woof! Woof!

Finally, 5E visited teacher Magda's students' blog and left a message in Laura and Rayssa's post (May 22) and recorded the message. Margarida was at the computer and Mariana at the board. There is no message from the Brazilian students yet.

The tech part was as usual, with my laptop and a video projector. We recorded the messages with Audacity and saved them as mp3.

I think that I had an overly ambitious plan, difficult to carry out even with smaller classes as 5C and 5E. However, most important is that there was great motivation and participation the whole time. BTW, students copied the messages in their notebooks.

I'd also like to point out that, through the students, I've often asked parents to visit both blogs, see what their children are doing and leave a comment in Portuguese. No response so far...

Our last CALL lesson of this school year is next Tuesday, a week from today. It's been great so far! Kids, you've done a wonderful job in these lessons.

   CALL Lesson 5

On Tuesday, June 6th, we have our fifth CALL lesson. I hope that you are enjoying learning English this way!

We didn't have a CALL lesson last week, because we did some revisions for Wednesday's test, but not everybody did as well as I expected (= nem toda a gente se portou tão bem quanto eu esperava).

Before we begin this morning, let me ask you a question: Is there anything different or new in our blog? What is it?

And now let me tell you something: Sharon says that if you have a dog, or any other pet, and want to have his/her photo in Holling's blog, you can give me the photo to send to her. Isn't that nice?! Your pet can have a dog friend in the United States!!!

It's now time for today's work. Let's visit Holling's blog and go to May 21 to answer a question that Sharon asks. Then we can go up to May 23 and answer a second question. We'll need the help of the World Atlas for both questions.

Next we will visit another blog called Kids and Learning English. Let's see where in the world these children are, their ages and what they can do and like doing in their free time. And then let's leave a message for them! If we have time, we can also record the message and leave it here in our CALL blog. BTW (By the way = A propósito), they left comments for me on May 22. Do you want to take a look at them?

Let's get to work! And work fast to do everything that I planned for you. Enjoy!

Universal Children's Day

Hi, kids!

In Portugal we celebrate Universal Children's Day on June 1st. This was decreed  (= foi decretado) by the United Nations Resolution 836 (IX) on 14 December 1954 that recommends that "all countries institute a Universal Children's Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children".

To celebrate this day with my three classes and congratulate my students on their work in our two blogs, I have a Certificate of Appreciation for you all. (Click the image for a bigger certificate.) You're doing marvellous work and are very enthusiastic! Thank you!!!
